frequently asked questions

Are braces right for me?

Most orthodontic problems can be successfully treated with braces. Braces don’t have to be as noticeable as they once were, either. At True North Orthodontics, we use the LightForce clear 3D-printed custom bracket to give you the most aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and best fitting bracket possible.

Can braces be lost or broken?

Braces are temporarily bonded to your teeth, so you don’t need to worry about losing them! That being said, braces can break or come loose from the teeth during treatment, extending your orthodontic treatment time. That’s why we recommend avoiding certain hard, sticky, crunchy and chewy foods during orthodontic treatment with braces.

Do braces hurt?

There will be some initial discomfort after braces are placed as your lips, cheeks and tongue get used to the braces. This adjustment period is usually short-lived and easily managed.

How do I maintain my braces?

Frequent brushing and flossing is extremely important during orthodontic treatment with braces. Your teeth, gums and braces must be kept free of plaque and food debris to avoid inflammation of your gums and possible breakdown of your enamel that could lead to cavities. At True North Orthodontics, your oral health and oral hygiene are of the utmost importance to us. We will give you the tools and teach you the skills necessary to keep your smile clean and healthy!

Do you offer flexible payment solutions?

Our in-house financing allows us to offer patients a great deal of payment flexibility. We will work with you to determine an initial down-payment, with monthly payments set based on your treatment type, length of treatment, and personal financial situation.

Do you accept insurance?

True North Orthodontics is in-network with Delta Dental.

Am I a candidate for a clear aligner treatment like Invisalign®?

Aligners are a fantastic option if you are interested in a less conspicuous orthodontic treatment. There have been many technological advancements in aligner treatment that allow the orthodontist to be able to correct several crowding, spacing and bite issues using clear aligners. Aligners can be used in orthodontic treatment for children, teens and adults. Dr. Hammer has even completed the Aligner Intensive Fellowship course so that she can provide you the best aligner treatment possible.

How do I maintain my aligners?

Clear aligners are removable, so you can continue to eat all of your favorite foods during orthodontic treatment. You can take them out to eat, to brush and floss, or for short periods for work or social occasions. It may seem obvious, but the aligners need to be worn in order to work! It is recommended to wear your aligners at least 22 hours per day, and change the aligners in the correct sequence. Because they are removable, aligners can be easily lost or damaged. They fall out of pockets and purses and may even get wrapped up in a napkin and thrown away. Dr. Hammer and her team will provide you with all of the instructions and tools necessary to wear your aligners properly and keep them from ending up in the trash!

Do I need a referral?

A referral from your dentist is not necessary to schedule a complimentary initial consultation with us. Communication is extremely important to us here at True North Orthodontics. We will be in touch with your dentist and any other dental specialists you see before, during and after your orthodontic treatment so that we are all on the same page, working as a team to deliver you the very best care. It’s critical that you continue to see your dentist for your regularly scheduled dental cleanings and exams during your orthodontic treatment with us.

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Of course not! There is no age limit on orthodontic treatment. Teeth are able to be moved orthodontically whether you are 7 years old or 80 years young. It’s never too late to smile better.
