Clear Aligner Wear and Care

Jan 17, 2023 | Aligners, Care

The ability to remove your aligners is one of the key benefits associated with this type of orthodontic treatment. Brushing, flossing and eating are all easier with removable clear aligners than with fixed braces. The most important piece of clear aligner treatment is that patients with aligners must be dedicated to wearing their appliances for the prescribed amount of time each day (typically at least 22 hours per day) to ensure you achieve the best smile results possible.

Should I remove my aligners when I go to bed?

You should definitely wear your aligners when sleeping! This is typically the easiest time to get some of your aligner wear hours in. Aligners are effective when a near constant pressure is applied to your teeth. If aligners are not worn while sleeping, the tooth movement process is stunted and your orthodontic treatment time will typically be longer than initially estimated.

How many hours should I wear my aligners each day?

Your aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours per day. Skipping a few days or not wearing aligners for the suggested amount of time each day will lengthen orthodontic treatment times. You should ideally only remove your aligners when eating, drinking acidic/sugary/very hot beverages, brushing and flossing.

What about taking them out for cleaning?

After removing your aligners, you should rinse them with lukewarm water to get out any build-up that as accumulated throughout the day before reinserting them. After you brush your teeth, we recommend rinsing the toothpaste off your toothbrush and then brushing both the inside and outside surfaces of your aligners. This will keep them clear and fresh.

Aligners are an investment in your smile, and the only way to to achieve your treatment goal is to wear them for the recommended amount of time each day.
